RE:
What does "board" in the term "room and board" mean?
This may sound like a dumb question, but a few of my friends and I have been wondering about this for a while. I just want to be clear on the term. :) (i don't know what category this falls under)

It means food. If a job includes room and board, then it includes both housing and meals. I had a couple of summer jobs at hotels that included room and board.
Warning: Although meals were provided, they weren't terribly tasty -OR- healthy. Greasy slabs of mystery meat with a side of boiled potatoes were considered fine. No green veggies, no fruit of any kind, no dairy products. Blech.

It means access to the sideboard. It is an old English term and refers to meals with the family of the house being included with the rent paid.
