From Wikipedia,

"The effect of Henry's Act in Restraint of Appeals (1533) and the Acts of Supremacy (1534) was simply to declare that the English crown was "the only supreme head in earth of the Church of England, called Ecclesia Anglicana," and that the Bishop of Rome had no "greater jurisdiction in England than any other foreign bishop."

What Henry did was separate England from the authority of Rome. But the Anglican religion itself was not fully solidified until Henry's daughter Elizabeth took the throne. She "borrowed" the principals set out by Martin Luther and incorporated them into Anglicanism. But ultimately, the Church of England was born of murder and brutality at the hands of Henry beheading his wives. A very violent birth to a new sect of Christianity.

Yes, and be grateful for it. He released England from the eerie grip of the pope and started a religion which today has become the most accomodating inclusive entity. If he hadn't there would still be no such things as personal freedom or condoms for that matter.

He probably didn't mean this he just wanted a divorce so he could have a son with another woman but I for one am glad he did.

Yes. He was angry that the pope did not grant his divorce from Catherine of Aragon (she was part of the royal family of Spain, and the King of Spain had the pope under his thumb, so he was afraid to grant the divorce. Rather than accept the denial, he broke away from the Catholic Church, and instead formed the Church of England (The Episcopalian Church here in the U.S.).
Really, the only difference is that the Church of England and the Episcopalian Church do not recognize the infalliability of the pope.
I am Episcopalian, and I have Catholic relatives. I've gone to church with them, and there is only one word different in the entire liturgy--they forgive "those who TRESPASS against us."

Henry VIII split from the Catholic church to form the English Protestant church essentially because the Pope would not grant him a dispensation to divorce. As head of State, he was merely combining the spiritual and temporal powers in one ruler.

Well -- it isn't like he made it up from scratch. He basically took all the Catholic Churches and priests in England, told them to keep doing what they were doing with one exception -- that he would be the head of the church instead of the Pope.

The other change he made is that he allowed himself to get divorced.
