I was out on a date once and we had gone to the store to get stuff, because this guy was going to cook dinner for me. He was paying, so naturally I grabbed the grocery bags and we headed to the door, he tried to take the bags from me, but i said i was fine, he looked so upset that i let him take the damn bags, then when we got to the door I reached to open it, and he stopped me and opened it for me, with a scowly look on his face.

I guess I should have told him I was a feminist before he came over huh?

Anyways, i figure if a guy opens a door for me, I open the next one for him, is that wrong?

No I don't find that wrong, my husband is the same damn way seriously I'm capable of carrying a few bags or handling a screw driver at that. I don't mind it (him being nice), but when he does and and treats me like I'm helpless that aggravates me. Though we really shouldn't complain because some woman get stuck with real winners.

Nah, it shouldn't be emasculating for a girl to open the door occasionally. I don't see what the big deal is, but some guys will sprint a half mile to make sure they open the door. I think our society and our relationships have gotten too complex for these antiquated notions of total chivalry.

But yeah, you should probably let him know that you're a feminist.

Some men (myself included) were raised and trained by the women in their life to show respect by opening doors, pushing in chairs, etc. I generally treat the women I interact with in this manner, and I don't get insulted or angry when a woman doesn't want to be treated like this.

Some men take it as a slight when you, as a woman, demand full equality. I've found that these men were indoctrinated with the idea that women should respond in a certain way, and it makes them uncomfortable when you don't act the way that they expect. Please don't take it personally...

Now, what does this have to do with faith?

Normally it would be okay to open the door if he was carrying the bags. But the clue here that something might not be right on your part is that you admit you're a feminist, which is not only a misguided belief system in my humble opionion, but a real turnoff for a lot of men.

I don't see anything wrong with a man wanting to do something nice for a woman. It doesn't take away from our feminist views. It's simply a nice gesture. I also see nothing wrong with a woman opening a door for a man. If he doesn't appreciate YOUR gesture, as you didn't appreciate HIS, then BOTH of you need to lighten up. :)

Not un the least,I walk with a limp and use a cane from a fall off of a building and I don't mind the help one bit. It's a good conversation opener with the ladys. :-)

I think if someone is carrying something, then it obviously makes sense to hold the door for them. It shouldn't matter whether they are male, female, or alien. It is common courtesy. I am a male and I always hold the door for the person behind me, I don't care who they are.

I don't see a problem here. Dating is a time to find the right person. Make sure you find one that treats you like a person and not a china doll to be protected to death.... Jim
