OK, before anyone gets angry, I am not asking this trying to make anyone mad, or to be rude or anything. I've just honestly wondered that. Maybe I don't understand what Atheists are about, but from what I understand, Atheists don't have any religious beliefs. Right? They don't believe in God, so why spend time talking about something you don't believe exists??

Why try to protect yourself from freedom of religion? You're on the Internet w/ a bunch of strangers. You don't want to believe, then don't. I'm a Christian, and yes, I share what I believe. But, believe me, I'm not going to hold you down and tickle you till you believe. Nobody can force you to be a Christian.

They are usually insecure people hoping to convince others that they are not. And by arguing about the Bible or Christianity they hope to persuade others to be just as insecure as they.

I can answer only for myself...

I do not believe in god, no. But "spiritual" and "religious" are two very different things. I believe that all of nature has a spirit. Spiritual is a very all-encompassing word and atheists can be very spiritual indeed.

As someone removed from many belief systems, I like to come here and try to understand why people believe what they believe. I also like to learn more about the history behind religion.

To quote Pierre Tielhard de Chardin, "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience."

I'm Atheist and I am sure not gonna let a bunch of relgious people tell me what I should and shouldnt believe in and that I am going to go to hell. My reason for being atheist is because I dont believe there is a god at all. I dont believe that someone died on a cross and was able to rise again, to me that sounds more like witchcraft, not something Christian like. I dont believe there is a devil and I dont believe in heaven or hell. I believe when we die, we decompose in the ground and thats the end of that.

Most atheists have made an informed decision; that is, they've studied numerous religions before coming to the conclusion that all are false. As a result, most are better informed about a variety of religions than the average churchgoer.

Also, many atheists DO have a spirituality.

Atheism is a belief that there is no god. It's still a belief even if it is a belief about non-existence of a god. One could argue that non-belief is a religion. That is one reason why atheists are on spirituality/religion forum.

Another reason probably is because they want to refute the beliefs of people that do believe in god/gods.

I think a lot of them are agnostics. I also think that there is a bit of a backlash against the religious right at the moment, and people see this as a forum to voice their unhappiness. I also think that there are a lot who call themselves atheists because they cannot categorize their own personal beliefs based on any particular religion.

I'm not atheist...but...for one thing, this is not the religion board, it's the religion and spirituality board, and most people have some sort of spirituality. This place is not just for Christians.

pvtdugan - You obviously know nothing about atheists. Lack of self-understanding? I know who I am, and I'm not defined by your god. Low self-esteem? I don't need a crutch ie God to make me feel good about myself or hold my head up high. Do you?

If you are certain there is a God, why are you here? For it's not belief, it's a fact.

I believe there is no God. It's a belief just like every other religion, because none of us really knows for sure.

...

But mostly because I have no life and nothing better to do.

regardless of what they (atheists) say - humans are the only creatures on earth born with an inate sense of who God is. We have a sense of right and wrong, good and evil, and we have an undeniable desire to know "the bigger picture" ie why we are here.
Whether they like it or not - they are on a quest, just like everyone else - they just aren't ready to admit it yet.
