The best weight loss program is one that takes in less calories than you use in a day and then at the end of it you don't go back to old eating habits.

There are a lot of versions of the valid weight loss program, but they all come down to this, for people who don't get exercise, eat 1500 calories worth of food a day and otherwise be normal. People who get exercise get more food. All of those diet meal plans are based on this concept. Make up your own version of it.

After a diet you need to plan out less restrictive meals that are a little more healthy and smaller portions to maintain that weight. Otherwise the diet will be for nothing.

Forget diets and weight loss programs for a start lol.
Think lifestyle change. That is healthy eating, plenty of fruit and veg, eat those carbs but try and go for complex carbs which keep you full longer (eg granary breads, oats), keeps the fats and sugars as low as possible and eat oily fish a couple of times a week. Combine this with a sensible exercise plan. If you are not fit walking is a great starting point. Get yourself a pedometer and start watching how many steps you do a day. Go for 10,000 but work up to it gradually otherwise you will give up. Get a friend to walk with you, it makes it much more fun.
Read the report at the site below about the GI diet. Use the principals of that as a basis for your new way of eating.

This answer is my personal experience and I have lost 4 stone (56 pounds) using these principals in the last 14 weeks.

I've gone to a program called slimming world here in the UK. However, doesn't matter what "diet" you follow, if you don't adapt that way of healthy eating as a lifestyle of eating then its useless to start. I still have my pizzas, my curries and chocolate, but I eat healthy foods the rest of the time and you HAVE to have some form of exercise. I usually walk around the block a few times. Any movement will help. If you go on any program....and don't make changes in what and when and how you eat, then when you stop, it will all come back on and then some. Take the concept of what they say and adapt it to your own life. It will work. Maybe not as fast as as some strict diets, but you will lose weight, and keep it off, and still be able to maintain your loss in the end. Best of luck to you!

(I've lost nearly 2 stone which is about 28lbs)

From personal experience there isn't one you have to change your eating habits for life otherwise you put it back on plus more when you come off the program.Don't go with out something you really want just have a little bit now and then try to eat as healthy as possible and the key is exercise even if it is just walking faster it all contributes. In new research they say to aim for 1-2 pound a week loss any more isn't healthy. If you are after a quick result try a detox and that is the same as soon as you put the toxins back in your body so do the inches. You should always see your doctor before you start to change your eating habbits.

Learning about nutrition and improving your overall eating habits.

So called "diets" are bull because they presume that you go on a diet and at some point you go off it.

Most diets are about deprevation and they won't work (like low carb diets) in the long run because they are generally detremental to your health (low carb doesn't distinguish between good and bad carbs and it encourages you to eat bad fats). Your body naturally craves certain types of nutrients from different sources (why people don't stay on deprevation diets).

You need to formulate and structure an eating plan that fits your lifestyle, your goals and is most importantly HEALTHY for you.

Learn about nutrition. Formulate an excercise plan that fits your lifestyle (although eating habits are 90% of the game, a good excercise plan can help raise your metabolism and supplement your eating habits).

A good place to start learning about nutrition is:

Eat Drink and be Healthy, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating.

This book doesn't sell you a "diet" it creates a "healthy eating pyramid" and debunks the myth of the USDA food pyramid on the premise that the USDA one is based not on health information, but on the reccomendations of the food producers. Also you will learn why some things are bad and why good and what effect they have on you.

My friend had been trying to give up smoking for years (bear with me!) and she used this book by Alen Carr. I have been trying to lose weight for years, I tried slimming world and it worked but I didnt stick to it. So I tried Alen Carr's Easyweigh to lose weight about a month ago. Ive lost nearly a stone and a half and youre looking at someone with the willpower of a gnat. Bascially its not a book about eat this or eat that, its a book which makes you look at what you are doing. He basically talks common sense - stating facts such as we were designed to eat fruit etc. But it is in no way preachy. Its actually a really good read and my friends who dont want to lose weight have changed their eating habits.
