The milk comes out white because of the amazing stomach system of Cows, the milk is green till inside the cow it mixes with the waste products and become brown, It then gets bleached by the Cows stomach acid before reaching the udders, turning the mixture of blood grass and waste into white liquid (milk).

Cows actually have only stomach, but with 4 compartments. That's a common misconception, but that's only part of the reason. The high calcium content is chiefly what makes milk as white as it is. You ever wonder why bone is white? Same reason. Grass is only green because of chlorophyll in its tissues, which the cows break down into usable nutrients. Chlorophyll is, after all, only a protein.

Because cows milk contains Casein. This is a milk protein very rich in Calcium, and Calcium is white. The cream in the milk is also very rich in this protein which makes the milk even whiter. Hence, milk is white and not green.

ah but cows aren't the only mammals. Squirrels eat brown nuts - white milk. People eat yellow fish fingers. White milk. Lions eat red wildebeast-insides. White milk. Repeat ad nauseam

I think the real answer is "calcium". Mothers concentrate calcium in the milk so that the young 'uns can grow teeth and bones. Which are white.

Well, for the same reason that blood is red even though the water you drink is clear.... It just is.

Actually, the fatty tissue of grass fed cows has a bit of a greenish tinge to it. The beef you buy at the store comes from cows that are "fed up" on corn for awhile prior to butchering.

It's white because all the fat droplets are very finely distributed into a suspension that reflects and refracts light back randomly so that it appears white.

Same reason why mayo is white (also a fat suspension in water)

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk

PS they don't bleach milk!! they just filer some of the cream off, and some cream is yellow

I don't know, but I think of that when I look at my cat's eyes. They're a beautiful fractured olive green and all that she eats is brown.Actually whatever is eaten is broken down into different colors through digestion and metabolizing.

It isn't always as white as it is when you get it in your milk carton. They do a lot to it before it reaches you, including bleaching it. I suggest drinking soy milk, unless you're a baby cow.
