I'm 29 and have a modern outlook on life, very positive etc. I moved away from home at 16 but not too far. Basically I look around and see everyone younger than me, my brother, sister etc. with such old fashioned tastes etc. I have a flat, very minimilist, and here they are decorating their house with daido rails, coving and awful, awful wallpaper. They buy these 'room dividers' or wall units in mahogany and put ornaments in them of birds and wolves for goddsake. When questioned they just don't why they do it! I mean yes our parents were like that, but surely people can think for themselves! And then they all seem to follow this zombie like state: must meet someone, must have baby, must buy fibre optic plastic decoration from argos. And the other thing is, fellow 'answerers' is they say they'd love to decorate like me but they cant afford it! Yes you can, a tin of paint, throw your c***py furniture out and do something with your life! Rant over. I despair.

Hi!

Me too!!

I know EXACTLY what you mean!!

I've told my husband, that if we do not keep up with the times with regard to EVERYTHING around us, and in particular the way we furnish and decorate our house I'm gonna put him in a home!!

I just HATE it when you go into an old people's house and they have had the same furniture for 30 years. You know what I mean:

A pair of red engraved wine or champagne glasses in an etched glass cabinet!

A JVC midi stack from the 70s that still plays LPS!

Eternal beau cups (chipped) and saucers with matching kettle and toaster!

'Chef' untensil holder by the sink!

Ducks that 'look over' the kitchen shelves!

Crocheted squares that make up a bedspread that are at least 40 years old.

Franklyn Mint plates either on a display shelf, or even WORSE on the walls with wire hangers!

Etc. etc., etc.

Like you say, it doesn't cost any more to be a little 'individual' does it? Goodness, there's enough makeover mags etc., out there. I also think people don't have any imagination or vision these days.

I have a friend who is about 30 and her house is full of dark furniture (just like her Mum's) and an old fashioned, but collectible, dinner service (just like her Mum's).

Oh, no, you've got me started now!!

Better sign off before I go too far!!

Great question by the way! Bet you got a few people thinking!!

Hope you feel better now, how do you think I feel, my hubby and I are almost 50 and our 24 year old niece thinks our house is far too trendy for people our age, she thinks we should have dog statues and bird ornaments everywhere, flock wallpaper and artex ceilings, floral curtains and patterned carpets, dado rails and an electric fire in a mahogany surround, brown glass beakers and a Pyrex diner service, she thinks were weird because we never had children, that were still in love and happy after 22 years of marriage and love exotic holidays and not a week in Morcambe, I agree with you some people really do need to get a life and stop been sheep zombies following what their families had or expect of them, chuck out the chintz and get with it I say, minimal is cool clutter bucks are fools.

some people are just stuck in a time warp....the house i have is over 250 years old with all of it's original fixtures and fittings...huge ceiling roses and architrave and massive fire places in every room, with a massive 3 storey staircase the decor is not that flowery chintzy stuff...it's painted in rich colours to make the place look it's age i would never change it....so i have kept the theme and made the house look and feel as old as the house is....it's still cosy and well lived in...i think that if i changed it into modern times it would take the edge off it....if and when it's my time to leave this world i would pass it on to my kids, and hope that they looked after it but kept it as old looking as it is...some people just don't like change....i do re-decorate every 3 years or so, but i try to keep it looking like it was back then, this house is passed down in my family and has always been well taken care of....there's not much in this house that's been changed apart from the fences outside

One shouldn't have to apologize for their personal taste, no? Live your life and let them live theirs. While you might chuckle about their decisions and occasional bad taste, they might wonder what you are doing with your life. So, live and let live my friend!
