Like all things that point can be debated on both sides. Have people been hurt by airbags, yes, but more people have had there injuries reduced because of airbags. What people do not always know is that airbags are much more advanced now and do not always go off. Since in certain angles the do not help, the car does not set them off because they will do no good.

In a car accident nothing is safe but you're more likely to survive a car accident with an airbag than without.
They're so effective that motorcycle manufacturers are beginning to include them on some models.
Check out the video of the airbag tests on this Honda Goldwing. I think it's pretty impressive:

Only effective airbags which opened in time when the car
crashes badly at its frontal section during a nasty accident, is safe enough to protect your head, face and neck from fatal injuries.
Make very sure when driving, the safety belt is locked on firmly
as standard protection.

As opposed to unsafe? I think you can clearly prove that with the advent of airbags over the past decade, there has been a considerable number of saved lives in vehicular accidents.

Probably so if they actually deploy. I was in a terrible accident and mine never deployed.
