Sometimes, it is ignorance on the part of the dog owner. Sometimes, it is the dog. Sometimes it is attitude of owners.

Many dogs bark when the owner leaves them outside in nice weather, thinking that the dog is, after all, an animal and wants to be outside. But dogs want, more than anything, to be with their "pack", which is usually their people.

So, the dog will bark to express unhappiness at not being inside with its people, or just inside guarding its people's territory and smelling their pack smell (home!).

If you are lucky, your neighbors might be receptive to a discussion. Ask them why they leave their dog out, and take it from there. Maybe you can work out something together if the dog is normal and the people are normal but not too sensitive or informed.

It is key to know whether the dog barks all the time, or just when the owners are home, or just when they are away. And, if it barks when in the house too, and under which circumstances. Some dogs are demented or get confused in their old age -- doggy Alzheimer's.

The barking seems not to bother the owners, so maybe it is only when they are away, in which case there is hope that a little education might help.

If you are not lucky and the neighbors are just jerks, then you are left with some of the other advice you have gotten.

What worked for me:

A coffee can with a handful of rocks or beans. Dogs hate that noise. Every time you go into the garden wait for the dog to bark and then shake the can. He will likely jump back. Get closer to the fence each time. Shake the can each time he barks. He'll learn.

Keep a log of when it is allowed out and makes a noise; contact your Local Authority, and they will serve an abatement notice on your neighbours, involving the Police, if need be.

Consult with other neighbours who may be affected, and get them to take the same action.

I work as a Security Officer in a UK Criminal courthouse, and we have had trials about noisy dogs which have resulted in convictions. Please take action - the more of us that complain and invoke the Law, the more the selfish members of society will be compelled to obey the Law, and the more tranquil our society will become.

Try this:

Control your dog's excessive barking in a humane way that actually teaches him not to bark. The Bark Smart Deluxe system uses an ultrasonic tone triggered by your dog's barking that corrects him instantly and consistently. It will even work on your neighbor's annoying dog! This waterproof and UV-resistant bark deterrent is safe and effective and has a speaker range of 50 feet, ideal for dogs in large yards. You'll even be able to set it to function only at specific times of day, if desired. The Bark Smart runs on the included adapter or on four D batteries (sold separately).

The Bark Smart Deluxe works by sending out an ultrasonic signal that only dogs can hear when activated by the barking. Dogs quickly learn that their barking causes this irritating sound and stop barking to stop the noise. Choose from two modes: audible and ultrasonic. Both modes signal your dog ultrasonically, but the audible mode also emits a tone that you can hear, so you'll know when it's working. An LED also shows when the Bark Smart Deluxe is active.

If it's that bad, call your local animal control office. Most cities have regulations for pets or noise ordinances, so your neighbors can be fined after several complaints. I am sure if the dog is as bad as you state, you are not the only one in the area that is in need of some peace and quiet

Telephone your local council and advise them of the nuisance. Call the RSPCA and see if they can help you. Have you tried speaking to the neighbour about the problem or if they are unapproachable, try seeing if you can get support from other neighbours in your street, this dog must be disturbing them as well as you! It is the responsibility of all dog owners to ensure that their dogs do not cause nuisance or distress to others living around them and your neighbour needs address this problem. I do sympathise and wish you luck

Talk to the neighbors and tell them that this is disturbing you, if you don't want to get involved then call the police, alot of neighborhoods have noise disturbance ordinances in effect and dogs barking constantly is a noise disturbance. I have had to do that once and the police come out and talked to the neighbor and I was able to stay anonymous.

Good luck, I know it's very annoying.

i had the same bother with the dogs next door but all i did was make friends with the dogs. let it know that ur not a threat. does it only bark when u pass or when u let the dog know that u are there.

the dogs next door to me were from battered homes and one is an american pitbull crossed between a bull mastiff so i wasnt planning to just walk in the yard and hope nothing happened. but all they wanted to do was say (dont come near me or u will hurt me and i will have to bite you) but all i did was sit down and let him know that he was bigger than me and ever since he dont bark as much and he dont scare the passing children.

i wouldnt urge u to do that incase u have upset the dog at anyone time.

i hope one of the things above answer ur question. thanks for reading.

Every time you go outside throw him a dog treat, he will be so distracted by the food that he will stop barking. Outilined in "The Dog Who Would Be King" An excellent book to take out from the library. Or talk to your neighbors about the problem.

giving the dog a bone sounds like a good idea.. some dogs have the instint 2 bury food.. you give it plenty of bones and after a while the neighbor will get tired of having the yard tore up and get rid of the dog or keep it inside.. and mean while back at the ranch, the dog will give you a little peace of mind, while its busy chewing or digging.. buy bones at the deli.. surely worth a try : )
