You won't ever forget about him. What happens with time is that your memories of him will be good ones - you'll think about all the funny things he did, the good times you had together and they'll make you smile. Nothing will help but time.
Getting another dog helps a lot of people, but you'll know when the time is right. You can't rush the grieving process and getting a new dog right now wouldn't be fair to him.

You shouldn't try to forget about him, you should celebrate his life. It is going to take while for you to deal with the death of your pet, in some ways I think losing a pet is almost as bad as losing a person. I had a good friend of mine that lost his cat that he had for 15 years and he was really torn up about it so we did everything we could to help him deal. We arranged a proper burial for him and all got together to make a tombstone for him. One of our friends painted his face in the middle of the tombstone and painted all the things the cat loved all around his face. It was beautiful and everytime he started missing the cat he would visit his tombstone. I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear but a lot of times getting a new pet helps ease the "pain". It's not replacing him, although it seems like that, I think it's more of having something to keep your mind occupied. Maybe you should try going to the animal shelter and adopting another dog. So sorry, don't ever forget about your lost dog. Good luck with everything.

You don't , and why would you want to. Just allow the good times you had togeather replace the sorrow of loosing him.
Maybe this will help
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Author unknown..."

He's not in your mind, he's in your heart and you are never going to forget him - not completely. And in all honesty, you don't want to. You are still dealing with your loss and have convinced yourself if you forget about him, the pain will go away. It does not work that way. Give yourself the opportunity to miss him, to remember all the times you had, and to cry if need be. That will help you more than anything else

Make a scrapbook, or shadow box that reminds you of all the good times. when you feel sad, look at it and then you will remember what a good life your pet had. a dog is an animal that really gets into your heart....so just give yourself time. if you think you may be depressed, contact a doctor. they can help you get through the overwhelming feelings to get back to normal.

You don't. I still remember all my special pets that are dead. It just hurts less with time, and good memories are there instead of feeling so bereft. It is alright to feel sad. Pretty soon you will notice that you spend longer times in between thinking about him, and that is normal. Give yourself permission to feel lousy for a while. But not too long, cause there is another animal out there wishing someone would come and love them...

Just give it some time Sweetie. I lost my Boston Terrier...and to tell you the truth....I never did quite get over it. It has been really hard to get that attached to any dog after that. I think it is a defense mechanism...afraid of hurting again.
