If the child is sleeping in a toddler bed with no problems then any time is fine to trade -up, so to speak. Usually it's best to ask the child if he wants to sleep in the bigger bed. At this point that's all your waiting for!!

We got my son a twin bed when he was 3.
He started in the toddler bed at 18 months, and by 3, he was getting to tall to be in the toddler bed.

We didn't bother with a toddler bed, and moved my older daughter to a twin with a rail at 16 months. She thought it was great.
My younger daughter, though, is 15 months and she is a little monkey. I never worried about the older one wandering the house at night, or getting up to cause trouble, but the little one is a whole other story. I'm going to keep her in her crib until she's able to climb out (pretty close right now), and then I'll move her to a twin bed with a rail but also add a baby gate and some serious baby proofing to her room!

Our 3 year old sleeps in a twin bed, she moves aroung alot so she needs more space. Our 4 year old sleeps in his toddler bed still, he like it. It depends on your child. If he/she is comfortable in the toddler bed don't get rid of it. What till he or she is ready for a big kid bed. When you do get the twin bed be sure to keep the toddler bed around for a while just in case, you wouldn't want them to end up back in your bed because they don't like the twin bed.

My son went to a twin in August at 21 mos, and did fine. I too think that a toddler bed is a waste of money--why buy a piece of furniture that you'll only use for 2 yrs? We made sure that he could climb onto and off from the bed, then bought a sturdy bedrail at Babies R Us for $25. He took to it in about 2 days.

We went from crib to toddler bed by 12 months, to twin bed by 2 years old, now we're up to a full size (and she just turned 3)
She flails around A LOT in her sleep. Even in the womb, her nickname was Little Helicopter.
Since we put her in the full size bed, she hasn't fallen out of it in the middle of the night (and we get a full night's sleep too)
I guess it all depends on your child's sleeping patterns, and how big a bed you need to contain him/her.

My son's taller than most kids his age & I used the crib as long as possible. It was a convertible style & I could make it into a day bed or use one rail for a headboard for a full bed later on. I did the daybed style & used a portable side rail to keep him from falling out. Most toddler beds are a waste of money.
Your child will let you know when it's time. There's no magic age to transition them.

I think it depends on the child. My daughter is 21 months old and still in a crib. She doesn't crawl out of it and she's such a wild sleeper she's not ready for the toddler bed yet. We already have a twin bed for her in the garage for when she's ready too.
