I have a kitten, and i had the same question myself. If you buy a good kind of dry kitten food, it should say on the container how much you should feed him/her according to their weight or age. if you feed your kitten only dry food, it can cause bowel inflamation, so you should give them a source of wet food too. usually, I keep the dry food container open, and let it snack on that all day(kittens usually eat several times through out the day), and then i give him wet food for dinner(he can't eat the whole can, its far too much, so i give him as much as he wants then i save the rest in a tupperware container). one can of wet catfood usually lasts my kitten about three days.
The problem i had, was my kitten wouldn't eat the amount the bag said he should have per day, it was too much for him, so i just let him eat as much as he wants, and he's the right weight, healthy, and very content.

Store bought dry kitten food is fine. Give it all the food it wants during the day (I don't want mine to wake me for food in the night,) cats are pretty smart not to overeat unless they are bored.

I recently adopted a kitten who was wild, probably only about four weeks old and had never seen "cat food." I had to give him water out of a dropper to start with, he was very dehydrated, until he realized he could get as much as he wanted out of a bowl. And I gave him things like milk, ham and scrambled eggs to begin with too, because he just didn't even recognize cat food as food. I kept offering him dry food, introduced him to wet food, and soon stopped with the people food. He eats fine now and is growing by leaps and bounds.

He still misses his real mom, who was killed by a car. So, I do give him milk occasionally when he is desperately trying to get milk from me. He doesn't just knead, he digs!

Good luck!
Gwen

you know, not to be ugly, but if you have to ask that then you've obviously not had your kitten to the Vet yet or your Vet isn't very good. All Veterinarian's and/or Clinic's will give you a starter-kit and advise you on the better foods and amounts per kitty, per day, to feed it/them..........
