My daughter did this for her wedding in May. She used magnolias. The lady who baked her cake, decorated in all in basket weave. My daughter then placed the flowers on and in the cake on the sides, so they looked like they casading down the side. She cut off part of the long stems, and some see took the blossum right off. We of course washed the stems with boiling hot water.

Please stay with silk, don't use fresh, because they make a mess. After the wedding, I took the flowers and washed them again, and I am going to put them in a shadow box with her cake and knife set that they used. So, they will be able to enjoy them, instead of just being boxed away somewhere.

God bless us all.................

If you want to have silk flowers on your cake I recommend arranging them yourself and put them ON the cake, dont stick the "stems" into the cake. It will cause your cake to have crumbling points. It also will leave holes when you remove the stems and serve it, which might not matter, but some people might have issues with the unsanitary stems having been stuck in something they plan to eat.

A tray? No. You can just put them on... I would wash the stem part before sticking it in the cake though.

A lot of people put them under the cake board and then sit a cake topper on the board. If you wanted them to be the topper, I would arrange them in a half a ball and put them on top. I would put some through out the cake and around the base also.

Just stick them in the cake. My grandmother has been making wedding cakes for 50 years, and that's how she always does it.

You can just stick them in but I would clean them first with a damp cloth to take off any dust/transferred material to prevent the cake from picking up the materials.

You wouldn't want your guests to get this in their cake. : )

with silk you can just poke um in, if you decide to do fresh, you will need to tape or wrap the stems first because they will seap out flower goo into the cake making it taste wierd and depending on the flower, possibly poison someone!

Have you considered using edible flowers? You can find them in many US supermarkets now and they are so beautiful. Then you don't have to worry about colors bleeding or the flowers looking natural.
