It is pronounced "Yates", to rhyme with dates. I had a professor in college who is an expert on John Keats, and he explained that the confusion with both names comes from the fact that with the exception of the first letter, the spelling is the same. Keats' name is pronounced "Keets," to rhyme with beets. He said that people get the two confused all the time, using the pronunciation of one for the other.
