Well, we pushed his face down in the mess he made and said "bad dog" etc. and then took him out. Then he knows what he did wrong. Now he always goes to the door and make a sound if he has to go out.

Remember that puppies do not have conscious control of their bowels or bladders until they're about 4 months old. You should start training them to go outside BEFORE that time, but keep in mind that they may still have occasional accidents.

Put the pup on a regular potty schedule so his bowels and bladder can get "programmed" to eliminate around the same time each day. Puppies usually have to potty about 10-15 minutes after they eat, when they first get up in the morning, and when they wake up from their naps. Use these opportune times to take the puppy outside and stay with it until it goes potty. Use a verbal cue such as "do you need to go out?" or "outside?" just before you go outside, so the pup learns to associate your cue with elimination. Give it lots of praise when it does its business outside.

If the pup has an accident in the house, scold the pup with a firm "no potty in the house", clean up the mess and then ignore the puppy. Never spank or swat at your puppy for going potty in the house, and don't push its face into its messes. This teaches it nothing except to be afraid of you. ((Keep in mind, too, that puppies learn "in the moment". If you're scolding him for going potty in the house 20 minutes ago, he won't understand what you're angry about; so only scold him at the moment the mess is made.))

Don't use newspaper or wee-wee pads inside the house. These train the dogs to go potty INDOORS when you really want them to go potty outside.

Feed the puppy 2 or 3 times a day, let it eat as much as it wants during feeding time, and then remove the food bowl. If there's food available all day, he'll have to go to the bathroom all day.

They sell things called "puppy training pads" at pet supply stores. They have some kind of scent in them that attracts the puppy when nature calls. You start by putting them near the door, then when you notice the puppy heading that way and starting to sniff for a spot to go, you take him outside so he can do his business. When he "goes" outside, be sure to give plenty of praise so puppy knows he's done well. After this becomes routine and puppy knows that outside is where he's supposed to go, you'll be able to stop putting the pads out, and he'll still go to the door when it's time. An added advantage is that the pads are absorbant and disposable, so when an acccident happens, (and it will) clean up is super easy. There are lots of different brands of the puppy pads, and they are all pretty much the same, so you can go with whatever is cheapest. I used them for my dog when she was a puppy and they really worked well. Good luck!

I would take my puppy outside every 1 to 1 1/2 hours, just to make sure. At night, get a kennel. My husband hated this idea, but I told him that since he wasn't the one getting up at 3 and 5 am, that he didn't have a choice. Puppies don't want to pee on their beds, so putting them to sleep in a kennel will help to potty train them quicker.

Consistency is the key.! I took mine out about every 20 minutes when I am home. This will wear you down, like bringing home a newborn, but it will teach them where they should go. Reward them everytime they potty outside. I keep a bag of small treats by the door and I take one out with me everytime. Praise your dog and give him the treat immediately after going. Be very consistent with your words. Pick one and stick with it....potty, pee pee, etc. Your puppy will learn what this means just like sit, speak, shake, etc. When they receive a treat for using the bathroom outside, they will want to do this more b/c they know they will get the treat. Once they get the hang of it, slowly take away the treats and then just give them lots of praise. Eventually, (weeks later) you will not have to do anything but take them outside. Be patient, they can't help it. It is best to take them outside often, so they don't have the chance to go in the house.

Crate train if possible. It will be much easier to potty train the little one. When potty training, be consistent as others have mentioned. Try to take your pup out the minute you wake up, a few minutes after breakfast and a few times in the afternoon if possible. Take them out as soon as you get home from work, after dinner and one last time before bed. It sounds like a lot, but this will ensure the little one doesn't have accidents in your home.

Importantly, don't leave out the water bowl after 7:00pm, as this will prompt your pup to go potty during the night.

Find the most nutritious dog food from a place like Petco or online, rather than grocery store brands as they are made with lots of fillers like corn and meat by products. Also, in case of accidents, find a good urine stain remover from Petco/Petsmart like Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle which have enzymes in them to 'eat away' at the urine stain and odor.

Take the little one out on as many walks as you can muster so he expends a lot of energy outside. Dogs, as much as we love them like little babies, are animals and have a lot of energy. If they aren't given the chance to expend all this energy, they will may become little terrors, taking it out on your rugs, shoes, and various other household items.

The best of luck to you!

The best advice is to have a cue word for going to the bathroom. As soon as you see your dog begin to go say your cue word so that the dog associates the feeling of going with the word. I use "potty". You have to get the dog used to the sound of your word and then when you take him/her out and it's cold, etc. you will be able to use the cue word and get your dog to go!
