One that doesn't allow screaming uncontrolled brats in. Nor kids.

For starters, it isn't any of the chains. Whetherspoons, Chef and Brewer etc - they're all high turnover, low quality businesses, and anyone that's eaten in one and then gone on to eat in a half decent pub will realise that.

The best pub restaurants in Britain are the independent ones, or the smaller chain ones. I know some really get ones in W.London (namecheck The Havelock, The Stonemasons Arms and The Cumberland), where the food is amazing and the ambience is great too... not like Whetherspoons.

Best thing to do is check out a local site which has reviews of local pubs and go on that. The Good Food guide is usually a good reference too.

Any time one becomes famously good, it becomes famously overpriced. Locally, I'd say the Dog & Gun, Malsis (on the Colne road from Cross Hills) is about the best, and while you don't pay through the nose, it's still a treat rather than a too-lazy-to-cook-Friday sort of place.

Of the chains, I'd rate JD Wetherspoon, Toby and Two For One highly, with the Toby least likely to be full of screaming kids. Brewsters, Brewer's Fayre and the like are full of screaming kids and need a wide berth. The chain that goes by the slogan "Inn Keeping With Tradition" (ho ho!) is fairly decent, but overpriced. Sizzling is a gimmick. Beefeater - well I have good memories as a screaming kid there playing Space Invaders (complete with cellophane for colour!) at the Singleton branch. There isn't one locally, so I'm only occasionally at one, and it seems decent enough.

There's still nowhere that'll give me a Dr Pepper though! Grr...

Tough to say, it depends what kind of thing you're after. What you could do is check out Beer In The Evening and search for high-rated pubs in your area; it's an absolute goldmine!

Screamin. kids aaah, how can anyone say that? Its the damn parents with their OIIII SHAZNEY, GET THE F****OUT OF THERE B4 I ....

Anyway moving swiftly on, Pigs Ear/ Trotter (can't quite remember the name) in Chelsea of lower end of kings rd is A1. Booking for a nosh a must. Its a bit posh and popular. No chains worth talking about really. I mean Wetherspoons ? really, if you like stale beer, sticky carpets and disinterested staff fair enough.

Well, I haven't tried them all yet, but "The Old Farmhouse" in Ulverston, Cumbria has great food & service - and if you smoke they will serve your meal in the 'pub' area so you can have a f@g........yeah........
