I've recently been reading about Islam. My question isf God's name, Allah. The prophet Muhammed said that Allah is His natural name for humans to use in reference to Him. (correct?) Yet, when learning about Moses, a prophet way before Muhammed, God revealed Himself as I AM. ('m not sure of the Hebrew word for I AM). Muslims believe that Moses was a great prophet, yes? Then why don't Muslims still call God by the name He gave Moses? I AM. Instead you call Him Allah, the name Muhammed said it is.

I am trying to understand the history of all the names for God, given by God, according to one's religion. Why don't Muslims refer to God by the name given to Moses so many year prior to Muhammed?

Thank you for your responses!

I agree with Tasneem, there are 99 names of Allah (The merciful, the beneficent...and the list goes on) but the end all and be all is one word and that is Allah. I AM is not really a name, I would have to read further to see what contest Moses used this phrase in. As Muslims, we respect every prophet equally and Allah was not the name given by Propher Muhammad(PBUH). It is a generic term used in the Quran by all prophets.

I'm a Muslim who reverted from Judaism. Jews call god, Adoni. Muslims call god, Allah. The difference is the language. Hebrew to Arabic. The meaning is the same.

to me Allah = God depending on me talking to a Muslim or a non-Muslim respectively. If I can give Him the same respect, I hope He is happy with what I call him, peacw
