50-50's are the best way to raise money. For every ticket you sell, half goes to the cause, half goes to the pot. People know the more they spend, the more they have a chance to win and the more money they can win. And it's cheap too as it only costs the price of a roll of tickets to hold it.

I agree with the 50/50 draw...works great. Do it at the bake sale and at the charity itself.
Try to get someone to donate a pair of tickets or some big prize and then get a big bristol board sheet and make squares on it (say 1-50) and have each person buy a square (put their name/number on it) for $5.00 and or 3 squares for $10 and then draw a number out of a hat for the winner when it's full or when the evening is up.
We've done spaghetti dinners, bingo nights...I raised $7000 in 3 weeks at our school this Spring...on my own too! I must have contacted 100 and maybe got 20 in total reply but they were great and we raffled the prizes off.
Go for prizes like hair salons, restaurant dinner for twos, your local theatre etc. and you can either auction them off (silent auction) or as I stated above. Have different ones on the go. You can even do the 50/50 draw on bristol board rather than selling tickets.
Make as many "squares" as you think you can sell or use more than one sheet of bristol board if it's a real huge event.
Get people to volunteer their services as prizes too.

Have a sponsored event of some sort, I did a sponsored horse ride for charity once where we were sponsore to ride all day in fancy dress. It raised quite a bit. Sponsored events like shaving heads or running etc are generally quite popular.
