My old dog weighs about 30 pounds and I give him a plain aspirin (325 mg) every two or three days for arthritis. It works wonders as a pain reliever. I would adjust the dosage according to the size of the dog. Also you might let him sleep on a warm heating pad and if he will tolerate it, wrap his leg with an ace bandage for support. He will probably yank it off as soon as you put it on though. It might be a good idea to get a second vet opinion. Most dogs and cats eventually recover from a pulled muscle eventually by themselves. That's a lot of money to pay for a pulled muscle that has shown no improvement. It may be something else. Try your local SPCA. They have excellent vets and often have a sliding payment scale for seniors. In any event, aspirin is your pain remedy.

pulled muscle most likely. if he tore his acl he would have been limping during the walk/ uphill jog. If he pulled his muscle it wouldnt really have bothered him as much until the inflamation set in, and thats why it took him awhile to not bare weight and then to limp. He needs to be rested this weekend, leash walks to go potty then right back inside, no running no jumping. Monday you need to go to the vet and have them take a look, usually they dispence a NSAID, nonsteroidal anti-inflamitory drug to help with the pain and inflamation. Whatever you do DON'T give him human medication, drugs like tylenol and Ibuprofin kill dogs even if you give them a tiny amount. It attacks there liver and kidneys and will shut them down. The best thing is rest and if you really want to be proactive you can ice pack his knee if he lets you, dont push it though if he doesnt want you to. Up to 3 times a day for 5 minutes each is best. Good luck

Hi. it really depends on the size of your dog but, aspirin would be fine i had a med size dog that got hit by a car years ago and didn't have any kind of income at that time so , i had talked to a person that had work at a vet hospital and she told me to put 1 aspirin warped up with cheese or ham and give it to my dog every 6 hr my dog did OK , you can try and see if it would work if you don't see any improvement in a day or two you will have to carry you dog to the vet, but i am sure that if you don't have any kind of income that the shelter would be able to help you , it wont hurt for you to make some phone calls and get some info on that situation .
good luck

We give our dog baby asprin when she pulls her leg muscle. Generic baby asprin is cheap. Our dog is about 60 pounds and we give her one pill.
