I've slept on a cheap mattress for some time... and it was terrible. Didn't do any long term damage, but could feel the springs in my back.
I would say to let him sleep on that for now, but maybe think about getting him a better mattress soon. If you buy a good quality mattress it's almost like an investment... it will last longer and will be better for your son.
It's not good to be cheap about something you're going to spend 1/3 of your life on. (8 hours a day sleeping)

I did and I got her a nice feather bed to put on top of it. Not only to cozy it up, but just to be able to take it off and clean it, just in case. I figured she wouldn't have the mattress forever anyway, and she sleeps well on it. It's a foam mattress not a spring mattress (do they even still make those?)

Yes it matters, you want him to have a good nights rest, and an in line spine..... cheap mattress can make for one wrestless nights sleep, trust me.
Best to get a medium to firm matress, and let him pick it out, he will feel much better about being involved in the decision making, and feel much better about being in control of getting a better night's rest.
A bad mattress can leave one in ache's and pains the next day.
Not a happy camper. ;-(

I think that mattress is important even for a kid. Could affect his posture.
