I am a stay-at-home mom and spend the majority of the day playing, singing, reading, and interacting with my son. We have a morning walk & afternoon outside play . However, we run out of things to do by early afternoon. Anyone have any games, ideas or crafts that are suitable for a 17-month -old and his attention span? I want his day to be fun-filled and educational but, I am quickly running out of ideas that are different and suitable. Any help is greatly appreicated!

I too recommend playgroups; there are so many activites that your little one can be involved in at these things, and it gives you the opportunity to have one of those longed for 'adult conversations'.
Do you ever take him to the library? Let him choose a book there.
Let him have a little while each day when he entertains himself with his toys.
A shot of CBeebies doesn't do any harm once in a while, either!

The best things are free. Pull out the pots, pans, and wooden (or plastic) spoons.

Make a little dirt pit outside. Section off a piece of land and turn the grass over or add potting soil. Bury some old blocks or broken toys. Give him a trigger-spray bottle filled with water, a spoon, and a plastic cup. When he's done getting crusty give him a warm bath and he will be down for the count.

Arts and crafts are always fun. Finger painting outside on a nice day, making a felt wall in the childs room and making figures to attach to the wall that stick with velcro is also fun, puzzles, playing dress up or hide in seek. Just a few ideas. I have a 12 month old and its difficult to keep up with. Sometimes I just let him go outside and get in the dirt and play.

Hey I'm a SAHM too and the best thing I found was a local playgroup-- it gets us out of the house and my little one really enjoys seeing new faces. The socialization is a great outlet for both her and me! Meeting up really helps take the stress out of having to plan the day- the kids pretty much entertain each other. I would suggest looking at Meetup.com to see if you have local groups.

How about a treause hunt? You could do this inside or out. Where you hide different "tresures" for him to find. It would be a fun game and it could teach new words or reinforce familiar ones.

Get an infant's V smile game for him. They're educational and babies like it.
