as a former bartender it is one of my pet peves when someone walks up to the bar and has no clue what to order....however, i was always willing to work with someone who had something generally in mind: i.e. they know they like vodka or rum drinks....
that being said, if you are not a 'drinker' or are new to the bar scene, try to order something light (malibu--coconut rum and pineapple is good if you like sweet things for example). or if you are more adventurous/experienced maybe a long beach tea (triple sec, vodka, rum, gin, tequila, a splash of sweet and sour and cranberry juice).
the key is not drinking to get drunk but to taste different things/types of liquor. when in doubt...ask the bartender what their favorite drink it. s/he should be able to hook you up.

Ask the bartender what the specialties are at a particular bar. These will be the better drinks, and you'll have an opportunity to try some unique items - some are even unique to the particular bar. (There was formerly a bar here called Blank & Company that was famous for a 64-ounce drink called the Blank Out served in cherry jars with multiple straws, you had to have at least 2 people to order one. I've heard rumours that it was a mix between Bahama Mama and Long Island Iced tea, but goodness, I've never had anything quite like it again!)

Just ask the bartender. Available drinks vary from bar to bar and even from bartender to bartender sometimes. They don't mind if you ask if they have a certain thing and if they don't have what you ask about most of the time they will recommend something that they do have that may be similar.

most bars serve the basics and popular drinks. Ask the bartender what his or the bars special is or what they are known for. Or just ask for a Mojito (etc) and if they say 'we don't make that' ask what it is they do make.

Every bar carries the same liquor. They want to get the customers money that's why they are there. Ask the bartender or the waitress what specials they have.

Most bars will have at least some of their drinks listed on a blackboard or something - that's a good place to start. If you ask for something and they tell you that they don't make it or have it, you can always just smile and ask them what they would suggest then.

Just drink beer or shandy to start with that way you won't get drunk too quick and can gain some experience of drinking before you hit the hard stuff - cocktails can be lethal especially if you're not used to alcohol.

I used to ask the bartender to fix me a drink that is fruity or a shot that has a dirty name, or a drink that's sweet and purple, a shot that tasted like chocolate milk, etc

I feel that a man should always order the drinks. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I just don't feel lady-like ordering at a bar.

They are making money off your order so they won't give you a hard time. Most common drinks and shots everyone will serve. If they don't describe what is in it and they will probably make it for you.
