Low Pass Filter is for subwoofers. Use this to keep the high frequencies from being sent to your subs, which would just waste some power and sound muddy. High pass filter is mostly for tweeters, although depending on how high the cutoff is, it may help your full range speakers sound better if they are small. High pass filter protects tweeters and other small or relatively low powered speakers from bass frequencies, which could blow them. Hope this helps.

High Pass Filter - only passes high frequencies

There may also be a knob to set these frequencies with.
