i have a cat. whenever it uses the "bathroom" it goes right next to the litter box, not in it. so we decided to change the litter box twice a week, but still the same results. we even bought the cat a new litter box, but again, the same results. if we don't find a solution we'll have to give it away. any suggestions?

thank you

Take him to a vet and explain the problem. Cats are clean by nature and not using the litterbox (even just missing it) usually is a sign of a problem.

Clean the litter box every day; use a different kind of litter (maybe the cat doesn't like the feel or smell of the current stuff). some cats also want privacy when they potty, so maybe the box needs to be in a different location.

Make sure, too, that you thoroughly clean the area outside of the box where the cat has gone. Remember, they can smell the scent even if you can't. Try using a bleach solution or Nature's Miracle to eradicate any smell around the box.

For my cats at home, I have their litter box under a small table in the bathroom with a large bath towel draped over the table so the cats can have some privacy.

My cat did that too. but she was a pretty big cat so i made a large litter box and never had the problem again. with a large box she was able to have plenty of room to turn an scratch and her butt wouldn't hang over. But beware if your kitty is having a urinary track infection she may not want to go in the litter. Try changing to a different kind of litter. Put her box in a large cardboard box or buy the litter box that has sides on it. Also some cats are very particular and want their box cleaned more often. Try scooping it daily. there are so many things to try. but make sure it isn't an infection by taking her to your vet.

If this is a new behavior, have him examined by a vet. Otherwise...

A different litter could be the answer.

One poster suggested using a hood. If the box is already hooded, try removing it - some cats find it uncomfortable to move around in a hooded litter pan, or are claustrophobic.

If you add baking soda or deodorizer to the litter, stop. The smell may be too strong.

If you have a mat under the litter pan and he is eliminating on that, remove it.

You should put newspaper down on next to the litter box so it's easier to clean up. You have to train the cat to go in the litter box. When you see the cat next to the litter box, pick him up and put him in there. You'll have to keep at it for a couple weeks or so, but cats are smart and will catch on.

Try using a different type of litter, maybe it doesn't like the feel of that kind on it's feet. Also you could try a type of litter called " Cat Attract" suppose to attract cats to use the litter box.

Cats do that alot. It may like that area to go to the bathroom in. I read if it does pick the area it goes to te bathroom the most and put the little box there, if it still doesn't use it then your cat could have a problem and should get checked out soon.

Get a lid for the box. You know, one of those enclosure thingies. Some cats just miss.
Also, clean the box everyday. Get scoopable litter and scoop everyday for the best results.
I have a friend that scoops the litterbox everytime the cat uses it!
Cheers.
