When many pubs were established a few hundred years ago, the majority of their customers were illiterate. To allow people to differentiate between different inns, they put up pictorial signs on the outside which could be easily recognised by those who couldn't read.

So, your average English pub-goer couldn't read a sign which said "Jack's Bar", but could easily recognise a large pub sign with a picture of a duck and a picture of a goose on it, and arrange to meet his mates in "The Duck and Goose".

Those names have pretty much stuck ever since, so many old pubs still have names like "Rose and Crown", "Elephant and Castle", "Lamb and Flag", "Fox and Hounds" etc.
