As a dog owner I would definately say it is necessary!
Dogs were not made like cats to keep themselves clean. Dogs togues are smooth unlike a cats that is rigid to keep them clean.
You have to look at when they get wet they smell, get like to roll around and get dirty, and yes after a while they will have an odor to them.

My vet tells me to bathe my dog - an Aussie. I am, however, no vet. Sometimes my dog's feet smells like FRITOS and the vet said that's yeast in between his pads and I guess it can grow in their ears too - where ever moisture tends to get "held". I have been advised to trim (not shave) the hair on his paws, and the hair in his ears. Cutting it too short can cause irritation with the hair poking at the skin, or rubbing.
And in icky weather I keep a bucket of warm soapy water near the door with a towel and wash cloth to clean up his precious puppy toes.
My vet told me to wash my pup with Selsun Blue or however the heck you spell it. I guess it's real mild and doesn't take all their natural oils away. Beware of getting that stuff in their eyes - It's not pretty.
For the most part, I just rinse my dog often and bathe him about once a month. As for keeping away fleas.... I always used prescriptions provided by my vet. I wasn't aware that actually bathing your dog would deter fleas, considering they are persistant little buggers.
As for their anal glands.... the vet takes care of that with his appointments. I don't go near the back end - it isn't my business. :D

While frequent bathing can dry out a dogs skin and irritate allergies, bathing once or so a month should not hurt the dog. If your dogs smell ever threatens your relationship with the dog, I would bathe it. Dogs roll in stuff, the get dirty, they get matts in their fur. Unless the dog in the book was stuffed....

Most dogs need bathed yes. However they don't need to be bathed near as often as people usually bathe them, escpecially if they are indoor dogs. I bathe my american bulldog once every 6-8 wks and that is plenty. He is a very active dog. And we are @ the dog parks frequently. If he is brushe off and wiped off he usually dosen't need a bath frequently. The only time we need a bath more frequently is if he has been out swimming in some stinky water, (LIke the river)

I dont know what book you were reading but throw it away. You dont need to over bathe your dog especially if it is an inside dog but yes please do. You and the dog will be happier for it. They have some sprays that you can buy to make the dog smell good. Just ask at your pet store.

It is best to bathe your dog to cleans the hair and skin and rid them of allergens and pests and odor. It helps keep them healthy, especially if it is a outside dog. They can get that doggy odor quickly and it gets in your furniture. If the dog hates baths you can purchase dry shampoos that are powder you sprinkle on and work into their fur, and brush it out. It absorbs the oil and dirt and leaves them smelling fresh.

Duhhh(sorry that was rude) u have to research the type of dog u have and it will say how much u have 2 bathe it.4 example my dog a Cairn Terrier cant get bathed that much, its hair (not fur) has special oils in it that makes her hair waterproof so if you give my dog to many baths it will make her hair all dry.
Thanks 4 your time!!!

Its not only the odor you want to eliminate but the little bugs that can climb in their fur. Not bathing a dog is not the way to go. If your dog is relitivly clean, then you can go a month or 2 without bathing. I would not forgo a bath for life.
dogs do not sweat, they do not have sweat glands

Any dog that lives with me will be bathed regularly. I use baby shampoo so it does't sting her eyes. I try to make it as pleasant as possible. My dog does not like to be bathed.
Afterword I give her a treat. Then she usually goes outside and rolls in the grass to get smelly again.
