Yes, decreased sexual desire is a common side effect of anti-depressants. It depends on the person. Everyone is affected differently. However, it is NOT an excuse to have an affair. There is no excuse for that.

In general anti depressants can suppress the sexual desire as well as affect the ability to ejaculate. Some drugs have a more serious effect on this than others and some people can use the same drug where one can have almost no sexual side effects and the other one won't have any sexual desires left. Hard to say, but it is something to consider.

The side effects of anti-depressant pills are very real, however, they differ from one person to the next. I have first hand experience with this. Not to get to personal, but my wife of 3 years has been on Effexor XR from when we first met 8 years ago for anxiety do to her sister's death as a young age. She recently went off of the Effexor, which was the equivalent to going off a narcotic street drug. But after she was able to get off of the drug completly her sexual desire and her ability to orgasm increased 10 fold. On the other hand many people have just the opposite effect in which they are more interested in sex when they are on a pill than when they were not taking anything. Hope that gives some insight.

It can, or it cannot. Some anti-depressants, like Zoloft, Well-butrin, and others, may have that side effect. But I've taken Zoloft, Prozac in the past, and now have been taking Effexer for over 2 years, and I am as horny as anything all the time!
But I guess it can affect people different. Talk to your doctor about the right one for you. Don't assume he/she is having an affair because they're experiencing those side effects.

It can reduce the desire to want to have intercourse yes. From my experience when i started taking anti depressants i went from having lil sexual desire to none at all.. Me and my husband are having problems cause of this at the moment cause i don't wanna do it... It could be that for him or he is having an affair but just to let ya know he might not be making that excuse up. Monitor his behavior.

Well it totally depends on you and your body Chemistry, but I can tell you a few things from my experience with Anti depressants
1st Paxil for me no sexual side effects, if any I wanted more sex
2nd now I am on Zoloft for about a year and Yes the first 6 months or so I didnt really want to have sex as often as before. I still did have sex. Somethimes I was totally not in the mood and other times I was a freak and couldnt stand it.
So I think all in all it just depends on the person. You have to see for your self. Your dr. should also be able to tell you more. Just tell your dr. your concerns and he/she should be able to put you on the right dosage for you!

It depends on the drug, the dose, sometimes the length of time it's been taken, and of course the individual. Decreased libido and effect on orgasim unfortunately are common side effects of most ADs for many people. Sometimes changing meds or dose can improve sex drive, but improvement in depression will often trump sex in importance - hard to believe but says a lot about how bad depression can be.
