Dalmatians make great pets!!!!! I have adopted out over 50 into loving homes. I do not recommend Dal's for a house with young children. They are super-energy dogs. Please feel free to contact me for more info.

Deafness is not perfered as someone below stated. There have been many attempts to breed out the deafness trait in Dals. Dals were not breed to be on fire trucks. Dals were around long before fire trucks were invented. Dals were orginially breed in the 1600 to kill wolfs. They were also used as a personal portection dog (being left with the carriage to protect it's contents). It was discovered that they work well with horses and they turned into carrage dogs. The association with the fire departments came along with the horses. The Dals kept the horses calm during the chaos of the fire.

Due to the popularity of the breed and the need to preserve its distinct features, such as spotted coat, the Dalmatian breed has been severely inbred. This has resulted in increased hyperactivity and behavioral disorders among Dalmatian puppies. These behavioral issues can be alleviated with patience and time, however can still pose a problem especially in homes with young children.
They can make great loyal pets once they are trained, however one must be aware of the time and effort that would be necessary to reach this goal. This is not a dog for the inexperienced!
Be sure to research breeders and the pedigrees of a dog before you choose to adopt. Don't adopt from a pet store. This can minimize the risk of deliberate inbreeding by a breeder. Good luck!

Dalmations, like allot of breeds can seem fine then all of a sudden turn on someone. I believe this happens becuase of all the intentional inbreeding which is done to produce deaf dalmations (which is prefered for this breed since there were on fire trucks) I have known a few that were great for years then "turned" I DO know that they are very high energy dogs and need allot of running room too.

I have found them to be great pets but as said before, they are not real good around young children and they are very protective.

Yes, but make sure you have lots of room and toys for it to play with, my dalamation drools a lot and always wants to play. They are very clumsey are probably not good around small children (1-7)
