i am looking for sony handycam but i can decide whether to go for miniDV or DVD..

would the DVD cam results (offering superior digi quality) undergo the same loss in quality when recorded on a VHS tape that miniDV results suffer when converted to DVD/VCD? or will the DVD results be of superior quality even on VHS tape?

I would definitely say that the DV is a better choice. I did all the research back in May. While the DVD cams are convenient recording directly to the DVD the quality is and record time is not comparable. The video shot with the DVD camcorders should look very good because the colors are well defined and accurate, but they are generally over-saturated making the video look unrealistic.

The other downside to the DVD is that the image is not as crisp as we see in MiniDV camcorders.

I have a Sony Mini DV handicam. I got it for Mothers Day this past spring. I use to video my daughter figure skating. It was the best choice I ever could have made. While there are other models that are decent in its class I feel that Sony holds a stronger product for the DV's. I purchased my handicam on ebay. I saved over $100 compared to retail prices. It also came w/ the warranty. You can't lose here. Check out the link to the Sony here: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=2142836&mpre=http%3A//search.ebay.com/search/search.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3Dsony+dcr+hc26+mini+dv+camcorder

Good luck to you in your decision!

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
I'm glad to have helped. These camcorders do still have this problem. They have quality and transfer problems. The Mini DV’s are known to have a much better recording and editing quality. Not to mention longer recording times. And yes I have transferred video from the miniDv's to CD. The quality was excellent and very easy to edit.

As you can definitely edit video using Movie Maker that comes along w/ Windows these days I’d suggest using Pinnacle Studio for any movie editing. This software supports all formats while Movie maker does not (Movie maker does not support widescreen). You can get Pinnacle Studio (just the software) for around $20-25 or if you need a firewire port.. I would suggest the Pinnacle Studio 500 PCI version which includes the adapter port along w/ the software for editing. They make things much easier to deal with and understand. You can get this at the site below for $77.95:

or
You can check them out on ebay possibly cheaper like I do:
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=2142836&mpre=http%3A//search.ebay.com/search/search.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3Dpinnacle+studio+500+pci

The 96 definitely offers a more significant boost in video and still imaging but for an increase in price. If the $500-550 camcorder is in your range then I would definitely say go for it. Also check them out here if you want to try to save some bucks: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-1/1?AID=5463217&PID=2142836&mpre=http%3A//search.ebay.com/search/search.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3Dsony+handycam+dcr+hc96

But if you’d prefer to stick w/ a lower cost then the 26 is definitely comparible to the 36 and 46 (they have minor upgrades). The 26 ranges from $268-345. Also check this link to save: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=2142836&mpre=http%3A//search.ebay.com/search/search.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3Dsony+handycam+dcr+hc26

3CCD will give the best image. They start around $600. Those units are by Panasonic. Sony doesn't make any lower cost 3CCD cams, you have to go to the mid-thousand dollar range to get theirs.

Video quality between DVD/MiniDV is going to depend on if you need to edit the video. If you plan to edit, MiniDV is better because it is less compressed and it stores each frame of video. DVD stores lossy compressed MPEG2 video, which contains full frames of video periodically, then only changed parts of frames. If you don't plan to edit the video, but just perhaps burn additional copies to DVD, then getting a DVD camcorder is just fine.

miniDV it is far better on the quallity, but, the chip used will give you the quallity is well a TriCCD it is best.
DVD camcorders have to encript the video in mpeg first and then write that on the disc, result = on fast motion video you might have some unwanted artefacts, like missing frames.

i'm unsure what the version is. i might think of that the DVD might final longer as adversarial to the MiniDV, as a MiniDV is a tape with extra shifting areas. i think of that they are the two digital high quality. additionally, DVD gamers are extra complication-unfastened than MiniDV gamers, i think of.
