Cayenne pepper is quite a mild spice so I would suggest paprika, however, if you want a bit more of a kick I would use about half a tsp of chilli powder.

Substitute For Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is just pure ground chiles. Chili powder is cayenne pepper mixed with other spices. Cayenne on its own doesn't have much flavor, mostly just heat- so the best substitute, in my opinion, would be crushed red peppers. Tabasco sauce would probably work fine, as well.

What can I use as a substitute for Cayenne pepper?

You could use hot paprika...there are mild, sweet & hot versions of paprika but the closest to cayenne would be the hot variety, available from any good supermarket. Failing that just a touch of chilli powder might also be ok depending on what the recipe is for.

I have mashed up a few pickled banana peppers or jalapeno peppers - I actually prefer to do this rather than use cayenne.

My Shoe Liners ??

Sorry... Bad Joke... I have used Tabasco as a substitute, but I rarely ever let my Cayenne shaker run low.

There really is no substitute. Paprika is too mild and the others are too hot. If you were really desperate you could use a chilli con carne sauce mix from the all-night shop. Any indian food shop would stock it.
