Religion was ubiquitous in those days. An interesting but little known triva is that when the US was first formed, church attendance was at less than 10%.
Everyone had a religion, and religious language permeated English at the time, but few people actually practiced it.

The Catholics had held absolute rule in Europe for 1238 years. They were merciless murders of any and all who did not agree with them in all maters pertaining to everything. From when to plant to religion to laws of the land to science. Our for fathers did not want that to happen here. The separation of church and state, which means that NO religious organization can control the laws of this land, was put into our constitution. It DID NOT include the removal of God from the public forum, ie. school, courts of law, public display, etc. as the liberals would have every one to believe.
