Nope - not actually a tree at all. Bananas are actually part of the herb family. You can find all sorts of fun information about bananas on the web... just google "where do bananas come from" (without the quotes).

It's one of those definitional things: if your definition of tree is "a largish plant with a hard stem/trunk and leaves at the top" then it's a tree. That's about as complicated as most people's definition is.

Some scientific definitions require that the stem is woody, which isn't the case for banana plants.

If it weren't a tree it would be called something else, like banana bush, or banana flower, or even banana hedges.

weather a banana is a fruit or whatever. Is a dogwood blossom a fruit. Don't think so, A dogwood tree is still a tree.

I would say it a Tree as a banna tree is perenal and can live for many years with each year producing fruit and can grow to 12-15 feet I have the dwarf varity and which grows to a max of 8 feet and makes wonderful dwarf banna for me each year
