In China, the releasing of turtles into the wild has been a popular activity since ancient times. Buddha promoted the concept of showing mercy to animals by setting them free; in his teachings, people often showing mercy will be blessed with good fortune and longevity. When Buddha’s teaching came to China, the Chinese applied it especially to turtles. Turtles are the animal that the Chinese sets free the most. Sitting on a pile of gold ingots, our Divine Turtle is meant to symbolizing that good fortune is here.
Granted, it's an advirtisement, but it at least explains the divine turtle.

The divine turtle is the gigantic creature that the world sits on. When it moves around we have earthquakes.
