Spiritual enlightenment means realizing one's origins and purpose, as a Soul. There are several stages of enlightenment, starting with the realization of own role in the Universe, followed with realizations about interactions with others, realizations about responsibility for others, and so on. Total enlightenment, and complete knowledge mean Divinity.
Few people are spiritually enlighetened. Most people find it more comfortable to simply follow a dogma, in the hope that someone else, the Church, a savior, or whatever they find comfortable and easy to believe in, will do their work for them. That is following the crowd and not enlightenment.
If the topic interests you , you may click for more details on the stages of enlightenment and how to reach them, on "Rational Spirituality" on the Dhaxem website.

I have been involved with instructing new converts for over 20 years and am constantly being spiritually enlightened by the faith of the people who come to us. Being a part of their journey to a closer relationship with Jesus is always an amazing and uplifting experience.

When I realized how totally ridiculous the bible actually is, I became much more enlightened. Sin, hell and Satan are man made words.

I am in the process. Answers are revealing themselves to me. Mere words cannot describe this process.
