Right now Iraq is on the verge of a terrible civil war. Suni and Shiite muslims are the primary antagonists.

I know the Suni were once in control... but other than that - What is the difference that makes these two sides want to kill each other?

The split came after the death of the Prophet Mohammed. Sunnis believe that Ali, the cousin of the Prophet and the husband of Mohammed's daughter Fatima, was the fourth and last of the caliphs (successors of Mohammed), the first three being Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman.

Shias, however, believe that Ali should have been the first caliph and that the caliphate should be passed down only to direct descendants of Prophet Mohammed through Ali and Fatima.

After Uthman, Ali succeeded as caliph. He was opposed by Aisha, the Prophet's wife and the daughter of Abu Bakr. Ali's forces defeated Aisha's but he was still opposed by Mu'awiyya Ummayad, Uthman's cousin and the governor of Damascus. After Ali's death, the caliphate went to Mu'awiyya instead of Ali's sons, Hassan and Hussein.

as regards the current fighting between the two, as far as I understand Iraq used to be ruled by a suni government, and after US invasion a shia government is in power, hence the disputes. however, it can also be part of the strategy of: "divide and you shall prevail".

if I am wrong please correct me Muslims.

Well the Sunni were ousted by the Americans who put Shiite in control. The Americans are still there so the Sunni fight the occupying forces and their collaborators.
The Shiite take revenge.
Of course where the Islam is concerned, both sides are convinced that their interpretation of the Quran is the best, just as Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists, Evangelicals etc. are convinced that their interpretation of the New Testament is the best.

You would have to go back in history to the deathbed of Muhammaad.

He left no orders or "revelations" as to who would be his sucessor at his death.

There was much dissagreement among his followers as to who should become their leader. This disagreement resulted in many splits within the movement, but two major splits were formed.

One believes that the sucessor to Mohammaad should be chosen from among his blood relatives, the other believed the sucessor should be chosen from among his most faithful followers. They are still fighting about who should be in charge to this day.

It's a difference in who they think should have led the religion. Something like, who Muhammed picked versus Muhammed's oldest. But I'm not Muslim, so I can't be sure.

unfortunately disagreements in religion practices that are quite different. Best would be to have a live and let live policy, but thye would rather refer to violent expressions , when both parties are quiet then some third party kills some of one party and then the violence begins again, peace
