This happens when I open older .AI files, possibly version 8, and I can't recover the text and paragraph tools even with a reinstall. Any suggestions?

Cristi - I do believe you are right about it being a font conflict and I think I've got it down to 'scala sans', which is a Type 1 font running in windows. The font seems to be installed and functioning. I got it off the cd from the job I'm working, there may be the conflict.?
I'll keep this open another few days in case anyone else has experienced this or has helpful input.

Oops. Its not the tools the itself, but the text and paragrahph pallettes that aren't showing up. I can use the Text tool itself, but am missing the options from the palettes, and no paragraph options at all. Thanks.

it is probably a font issue, meaning that you have some fonts missing. If you use a mac check the suitcase or whatever font managment program you use, on windows check in fonts folder see if it is something missing.
