Our children are our hearts and we intrust them every day to a strangers driving. I'm so coffused, we are made to wear seat belts in our private viehical but not puplic transportation. School buses are not even equiped with them. Does any one know why?

In Iowa it is required as well.. Children must be belted in until age 13 actually.

But the differences between a school bus and a standard car is the seating (if the child sits properly) a front impact will throw them to the seat in front which is FAR better padded then the standard vehicles. Also a side impact they will be thrown to the side which again the sides of the seats across the way are just as well padded. There is minimal chance (train or semi could do it) of a bus turning over completely where as a car or truck can be easily turned over due to the fact the wheel base is not nearly as large (the dimentions between the wheels themselves and the ground).

Yes, I can understand you concern, and I do feel the same way I think seat belts should be available in busses, but these are why they are not despite the laws.

I've always wondered that myself. The bus that the disabled and special ed kids ride on has seatbelts, I did notice that. So how come the rest don't???? Like you said, it's the law....is safety right....yeah I don't get it either.

And in response to the whole accident reason....I've seen buses turn over quite often in a bus accident....it's a bus, it's top heavy....it's not as hard as people think. There's more school bus accidents than people think and over 90% of the time, from the ones i've seen, children are hurt. Personally I think seatbelts should be required in buses. They can slam into each other (sideways), they can fly over the seats, and flop around all over the bus. I say they need them. I've seen too many kids hurt or killed on the news in a bus accident

They don't have them on the school bus because if they did have an accident they would just bump into the seat in frount of them. I belive that they should put seat bealts on the bus because a reack could cause a child to fly forward over the seat.
