If I were sitting in a 1970's car with the engine running, parked in a closed garage would it be safer to.....

have the car windows rolled up or rolled down?
If rolled down, why do you say so?
If rolled up, why do you say so?

Parked in a garage with ANY internal combustible engine is bad, period. So, to answer your question, windows rolled up, as this restricts the air in the car mixing with the bad gasses outside the car for a little longer than if the windows are rolled down. Now after saying that, don't try it! I have already lost a friend and classmate by carbon monoxide poisoning, and I wouldn't want to go through that again. Heart!

Either way your going to die. Carbon monoxide fumes kill. You might live a few minutes more with the windows up, but its only a matter of time. Fumes still get in the car even if the windows are rolled up.

This is NOT a safe situation to get into so neither is "safer"!!! You will die, unless you either: switch off the engine; or open the garage door and get out of there.
If you are feeling unhappy and want to make it look like you are attempting suicide, this is a good way for it to go TOO FAR and actually die!

This is not safe in either case. Don`t try either or you may not live to try this again. Are you suicidal? Haven`t you heard of carbon monoxide? In either case you can die from the build up of carbon monoxide when the car is running inside a closed garage.
