I have a 16x24 foot garden with a fence around it. It grow most anything I want. A few plants of each vegetable gives all I need and some to give away. If, I grow Melons I do two different methods. Either I plant them in pots or I plant them along the fence and tie the runners and cut some off, then when the melons come on, I place the melon in a small net on the fence. Everyone gets a laugh as it looks like the "Pod People from Mars".

During the second world war the government gave out booklets on planting the Victory gardens..you might look up Government of Canada archives of publications and manuals. Or the reference libraries, microfiche.
These were small postage stamp plot sizes.

Try using big pots. I have several friends that live in Condos and they can not plant things outside in the ground. So they have been using large pots on there balcony or porch. They plant tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce, ect.... You can bend tomato cages to fit your pots for tomatoes and vining plants such as green beans (pole beans).
Hope this helps. I have a medium size garden and the veggies are so much better then what u buy in a the store.

You can do what my grandfather did and just use a little spot in your yard and plant and grow what you like and what you think you will need. Remember that even like 5 plants can produce a lot. One more thing my grandpa and my dad used miracle grow (couple of plants and lots of miracle grow does wonders) If you need a lot I am not sure a small space is good.
