This is a good one to teach our mind to concentrate, called the twenty-four second meditation. It involves picturing numbers made up of dots as shown on large digital displays. We commence by picturing the digits 24. When we can clearly visualise each dot which makes each of the two digits two and four, then we move to 23, and 22. The concentration on the dots helps to eliminate other thoughts from the mind, and with a little practice over a few days, we are able to move from 24 down through all the digits to 0. If another thought enters our mind during this process, then we must start again. This is why it takes a few days before we are able to succeed Once we can succeed then we are achieving an alpha state of mind, which is relaxed, and free of the linear thought process. This is the state of mind required for deep meditation, which we discuss later.

Meditation is difficult for the western mind. Culturally, we are just not geared for it, but I've found a solution. Overstimulation of the senses can have the same effect as "emptying the mind".
Dim room (or dark) light a candle to stare into. This overstimulates the optic nerve. Headphones. Doesn't have to be super loud, but loud enough that you can't hear anything else. Incense to stimulate smell/taste a piece of silk (or something) to hold in your fingers.
Just be, and let all the stimulus wash over you while thinking of nothing in particular, and you will be surprised how easily you can drop into a meditative state. Vision greys out, music just sort of disappears, etc.

Try focusing on something. Many people use the breath as a focal point for meditation. Basically, you become aware of your breath, or try breathing exercises. But there are other things you can focus on, too. A candle flame, a topic written on a piece of paper (an affirmation or saying), incense smoke, or perhaps even an object of your choosing. It's not always easy to clear our minds. In a world full of constant external stimuli, I sometimes think the mind has become conditioned to entertain itself in silence. Sometimes, meditation doesn't have to be about clearing your mind at all, but rather observing what you're thinking about. If you can train yourself to observe your thoughts without judging them or allowing them to emotionally overwhelm you - that's just as much meditation as clearing your mind. Good luck!

This is a type of Meditation in which one hears different sounds(related to the seven Chakras)Try to catch the faintest of all sounds and hold on until it becomes louder then leave it & catch hold(listen)to the next faintest until you hear the Eternal Cosmic sound ''AUM''or 'OM' like the Thounderous Roar of the Ocean, so loud that you get immersed in it .
If you manage to reach there you are indeed face to face with the Cosmic Consciousness - GOD.
This Yoga technique of Aum Meditation(Sanmukhasan) has been taught in Lessons in Self-Realisation by Pramhansa Yogananda. If you follow them ,it would be of use to you as you already appear to be in that line.

We have been conditioned to believe mind is largely out of our control, but this is untrue. I have trained myself to not allow songs to get stuck in my head, among other things, over the years. It takes patience, and practice, and confidence in your ability to be in charge of your mind. I can now silence my mind-chatter any time I want to; I can meditate at work as I walk around.
At first, you might need to tell your mind to be still, as a command (gently but firmly...always be patient). As you get better at it, you will be able to just turn it on or off like a light switch. Also, watch phrases like, "try to": we also have been conditioned to believe we must expend effort, but there is no effort in mind. It is formless, eternal, infinite, and highly creative and powerful.

I meditate best in our Adoration chapel.
Quiet, peaceful and calm.
It is hard to rid your mind of all the problems around you though!
I think Prayer and Practice.
Peace, and keep seeking the truth!

honey, it all depends on what you mediate upon..you will never get to clear your mind out completely, it's a change of consciousness you need to have....the best way to meditate in this hectic era we're livingf is through mantra yoga, man= mind tra=set free..as a joke is a group of words that has the goal to make you laugh, a mantra is a group of words that has the goal to set your mind free, exactly what you want. the most famous mantra these days is the hare krishna mantra : hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare.

Listen to Enigma and burn incense, preferably lavendar. Honestly, Enigma is the best New Age music to clear my mind, though something else may work better for you.

Greet each thought as it enters your mind. Don't try to fight it. Just tell it, OK, so here you are. Then gently guide your mind back to your purpose, which is apparently 'no thought'. It just takes practice. Keep trying.
