Start with one thing. What is it you really love. What is it you really want in that room. That is the focal of your room. Around that one item you will pick color's, textures, and stuff.
Do you want open roomy spaces? Don't clutter and lighter color's bring that out.
Do you want cozy homey feeling in the room. Well lots of flowery decorations and lace will bring that out.
Decorating can be a lot of fun and once you start to see how it works anyone can do it. Trust me if I could figure it out you can too.

I start with the size of the room.
Always consider the "natural layout" or the way the room is shaped. For example: where does the sofa fit best for the function it needs to provide? and the cahirs? If the TV is the focal point, consider the positionaing etc.
Second what is the size of the room? Is it large or small? Remember that that the lighter the tone on the walls the larger the room will feel. If the sofa is brown leather, consider a pale ivory, or a soft shade that will contrast with darker tones of your existing pieces. Something will keep the room from getting too "heavy" with dark colors.

well. sounds like u have a Red/Gold rug that will be the main colors of the room. since your leather sofa is brown, you are in the same "rich" color theme. i suggest painting the walls a dark gold-ish color, kind of like marigold or dark buttery/orange yellow..that would go well with the brown and red. then u can get a nice piece of artwork framed with dark brown, or ornate gold, and use that as a center of the room along with the rug. try to clear out the unnecesary stuff, or get some dark cabinets to "hide" the stuff in. :) good luck!

wall colour and take stuff that you really don't use out of your room, then maybe new wall hangings for your new painted wall,
a vanilla tan is a popular colour or mushroom cap ,either one would go with your furniture. maybe go with a different colour area rug though, having red in it might be a little much.
some ideas for you anyway. good luck

You could have a garage sale and get rid of stuff you don't want anymore then I would start with painting the room and window dressings then lighting if the current one doesn't work with the room.
