ear infection and trauma are two common reason for ruptured ear drums. can be there for reasons as bad as precancer, typically not a bad illness and an easy surgery with a good recovery rate. once again depends on why he has the rupture, hope he gets better soon, good luck

Relax; this is not "serious". People's eardrums usually break from frequent ear infections or a horrendously loud noise. The operation will probably improve his hearing in the affected ear. This is done as an outpatient procedure by an ear, nose and throat MD (ENT), so don't worry!

Chronic ear infections (otitis) can cause erosion of the ear drum, or ulcers of the ear drum to form.
It is not a serious operation, and it will improve his hearing.
You can stop worrying now.

I'm sorry that you are handling such a lot. The fear and uncertainty along with your mum is overwhelming, and understandably so. Please speak with the medical professionals approximately your issues, and if she does have the korsakoffs syndrome (it is meant to be because of a loss of thiamine/B1 within the mind despite the fact that I'm now not a general practitioner myself), might be they're going to desire to hospitalize her for medication if that is suitable.
