Does anyone know if a cat will choose to pass on, as silly as that sounds, just because she is feeling a little tired. My cat had a very good appetite, her hearing and eyesight were fine too. I can't say for sure how old she was. I took her in Labor Day weekend of 2005. My landlord only told me that she was a stray (outdoor cat-couldn't keep her in except during storms or when she got hurt) and has been around for many years. She loved to still play and whatnot but I'm just trying to understand or figure out why she might have died otherwise. (I don't even understand what I just wrote.) Basically, even though she had her appetite, hearing, sight, but was just a little old, can a cat simply pass anyway with no other signs? The only sign I ever saw was that sometimes she seemed a little tired. Thanks for any input. Heartbroken as all heck but I did lose 8 pounds in a week. Whoopie.... Goes with the grieving I guess. Oh, her name was BUDDY.

At least you made her remaining time on this earth comfortable and happy. It's good that she went knowing that someone loved her.

Oh this is so sad and I feel for you. I had exactly the same happen to my first cat, Sophie. She was a stray originally until my parents took her in. I had her for about 18 years (I was only 2 when we first got her!) and it was sooo sad when we finally had to have her put to sleep. She was basically starving herself. We had her checked out at the vets about 4 times over the course of about 6 months as she just kept losing weight and had no appetite, even for prawns, which were her favourite. Her teeth were ok (considering her age), she had no medical conditions that were obvious to the vets, blood work came back fine etc. No clue at all. The vet just said she wants to go. it was so sad. We were offered the choice of force feeding her through a drip,. but the vet did advise that if she wasnt happy and just had enough, she will starve herself again anyway. We were so destraught that one day we may wake up and find her dead, that we couldnt bear the thought of her losing any more weight and being here longer than she wanted to be. She lived a good life - being nearly 19 when she went. I have always longed to know why she gave up, but guess I never will. She spent the last few months of her life just sleeping and not wanting to be disturbed. She weighed less than a bag of sugar when we finally decided it was enough.

I sympathise, it is hard. Rest in peace our furry friends. Never will you be forgotten.

It is impossible to know why the cat passed away. But if it was an outside. old cat, it may have contracted a disease. It probably never had any shots or vet care, which is just terrible. I have nine cats and they all go to the vet at least once per year. One had bad teeth and had to have most of her teeth removed and the rest cleaned. Animals need care too.

I had a ginger cat called kipling who lived until she was 17 - she was the fittest cat we have ever had and only went to the vets for routine checks and jabs etc... she went down hill really quickly and one day just decided not to eat anymore.

The vet said it was time for her to go and the best thing would be to put her down - we booked an appointment for the following day, the next morning we woke up and she had disappeared.

We searched everywhere for her and put up loads of posters etc.... she finally returned 3 days later and we knew then that she was ready to go - you can definitely see it in their eyes.

It was really really sad and took 4 years before we got another cat.

Honestly, Ive just had my cat put down last month. i was very sad, but i knew at least 2 months before her death that the time was going to be soon. she was getting old, i could tell the signs. one day she was fine, but the next she couldn't stand up properly, her legs were all swollen, we took her to the vets who said really it was better off for her to be put out of her pain,we had no choice but to rest her in peace. the point is, a cat knows itself when they are not well and old. i could see it in my cats eyes that she knew what was about to happen. i cried, but life is life. for your cat, it sounds strange but if its time to go, she knew about it.

Cats are very independent and self reliant. Maybe she had other symptoms but chose not to let you know - she was just happy being loved. In the end i do believe animals know it is their time and accept it. My last dog just decided one day he wasnt going to get up - it didnt matter how much we tried he had given up on life - its devastating but at least you know there is definitely no pain/ suffering for her now.

We had a tortoiseshell who had reached the end of her natural life and the vet had decided that she should be put down because she had become so debilitated. Shortly before this was to happen (I was not in the know!) I felt her begging me to be let out. I saw no harm in this, assuming that she was too weak to negotiate neighbouring fences, etc. She never, in fact, returned. She was ready to die and she had gone to do it in her own way.

Sometimes kitties can have problems that we don't know about, and sometimes they can seem healthy but their bodies just give out...there really is no way of knowing.
She probably went peacefully though if she died in her sleep.

I'm sorry for your loss...I know it is so hard to lose one that you love so much.(((((hugs)))))
