I've heard from numerous military folk that there is SO much gay sexual activity going on in the military that officials are finding it hard (excuse the pun) to keep it under wraps. Does being in the military give you a free pass on what gender you can have sex with while you're enlisted?

There are gays in the military but the exact percentage is unknown, do to the don't ask don't tell policy. It basically means if you are gay don't let everyone in the world know, and no one should be asking you sexual orientation. A lot of people in the military look down on homosexuality, but never press the issue because the person doesn't bring it to work. As long as a person does their job it doesn't matter who they are doing at night.

Not a free pass for your sexual orientation, but it allow homosexuals to practice in private without any consequences, barring no one finds out. The Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy keeps people who practice this to remain anonymous. I am strongly against homosexual behavior, but if I don't know if a Soldier is or isn't, then I won't focus that. The cold truth is that since the military has dropped it's standards for enlistment, they are allowing any and every lifestyle in the military. So there are all kinds of homo and bi sexual practices going on. Scary to think that our future leadership of the military may be a homosexual, but that is a reality

Being in the Military doesn't give you a free pass on what gender you can have sex with, but being a consensual adult does.

If you get caught , you're busted. Not just in rank, you will also discharged. Some enterprising folks might use homosexuality as a ploy to get out of the service and away from combat conditions.

if you enter the military you agree not to talk about being gay if you are, if you violate that agreement then you are separated for not telling the truth, its as simple as that...

And I'd guess there's much more gay sex going on at any college USA than there is in the military per capita.

The military doesn't ask what you are doing under the covers when you are away from work. It's none of their business and they don't want to know. Also, sexual harassment laws (and military rules) prevent you for discussing that sort of thing at work.

Not a free pass, remember Clinton's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. As long as they don't tell, they won't be asked if they are gay. But if caught, they would probably be discharged.

They shouldn't be in there. And the "away from work" argument doesn 't apply, because you did not indicate that was "away from work," but rather in the military itself, which IS their work.
