Hi,
It denotes items that are chargable for tax. (exempt or zero-rated items are not marked with an asterisk)
Have a look at http://www.direct.gov.uk/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/BeginnersGuideToTaxArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4015895&chk=8gHIJf
or
http://tinyurl.com/lgta4
which explains that, and then you can view;
http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000136&propertyType=document#P450_39029
or
http://tinyurl.com/zy6lh
which is a full list of zero rated items. "Group 1" in the "Schedule 8" section deals with Foodstuffs, and explains what foods are chargable and which are not;
http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000136&propertyType=document#P508_39652
or

Basically, to you and me, foodstuff like Cereals, which are considered "essentials" are zero rated, but Ice-Cream which is considered non-essential (Except me, where Carte D'or's "Lavazza Latte Macchiato" Coffee flavour is concerned!) is chargeable.
HTH

I AM SICK OF HEARING ABOUT THIS! its all over the TV and just about everywhere you go. No it is not that i'm heartless and completely cold but because the parents are to blame entirely. I am not a parent but i sure as hell wouldn't leave my YOUNG children alone in a completely different country, and yet people are making out as if they're smart individuals...clearly not - they are lacking common sense. I do feel sad that such a young child had been neglected and has suffered because of that..I believe that they are unfit as parents and the other children should be taken into care. Remember any other cases of neglect? Jamie Bulger, for example, left alone while his mother was 'busy' shop lifting.
