I think history has produced very good and great military leaders. I would recommend Sri Guru Hargobind Ji maharaj for very recent history where he fought for righteous and not to conquer. With an army of 2000 he conqured an offence of over 15000 men.

Another one I would recommend would be Sri Dhristadyumna Ji Maharaj - who fought and won the greatest battle of all times "Mahabharat's Kurukshetra Battle" - as leader of 6 states and commander of amry of over 400,000 men.

Adolf Hitler!!
German Panzer divisions defeated the French army and the British Expeditionary army and captured the whole of France in a week. That was unheard of at the time.
The german army captured Stalingrad and was 70 miles from Moscow when they were eventually turned back. If the German army had been able to defeat Russia and get a hold of Russia's vast natural resources (oil, uranium) and free prisoner of war labor, the US government would still be in a "cold war" with the Third Reich right now.
No matter the atrocities the German regime commited in World War 2, the brilliance and effectiveness of the German "blitzkreig" can not be denied.

There are two military leaders who have the admiration of the world, who had integrity, skill and were brilliant, God fearing men Robert E. Lee (well for that matter three) Tomas Jackson and Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Even today men flock to their graves speak in reverence and what better proof then gaining the respect of your enemies. They are studied in every military academy in the world! Out of the three I would have to select Marse Lee. To the ages goes greatness. God bless you and the Southern People.

Has to be Alexander for me, but I agree, if it isn't, Ghengis Khan is your man. Both personally led armies in the field in prolongued and exhaustive campaigns over hugh swathes of the earth. Alexander from Greece, Egypt, the Middle East to India. Ghengis south from Mongolia into China and Korea, then west to the central Europe. Both, I think, undefeated in battle (if they did lose, I'm sure some kind soul will correct me).

A brief overview of other leaders:

Hitler, obviously wrong. He wasn't a general (he had generals working for him) and if he was such a great military mind, what about his "no retreat" order? It worked once for him in front of Moscow so that was his final word on the matter, with disasterous consequences for the Nazis (thank God!). You might as well praise Stalin then for beating him!

Rommel, yes a good general, but hardly a mark of greatness to be chased out of North Africa and suffer defeat at the Normandy landings. I would put Heinz Guderian before Rommel.

Macarthur. You have a point. Great stateman as well (drafting the Japanese constitution after the war). Not quite in the league of Alexander though and he seriously considered using nuclear weapons against the North Koreans and Chinese.

Sun Tzu. Great book but I don't know. Did he make a lasting difference in conquest?

Napoleon Bonaparte. Great general, especially in the early Italian campaigns and Austerlitz. A capable war leader to boot. Unforgiving of his fellow heads of state though and this led to his downfall. Wellington didn't think much of him when the armies met at Waterloo. "My God, the man's just a pounder."

Patton. Certainly colourful and didn't like his troops to sit around on their fannies, as he might of said.

Air Marshall Dowding. That one brings a smile. Good choice! But air forces cannot take or hold territory.

Alexander the Great, Gengis Khan, Napolean, depends on 'greatest'. 1 Battle could give you a different answer ie Pattern or you could look at it like this - Queen Victoria Ruler of the British Empire and therefore head of the armed forces and the biggest Empire the World has ever known. It's a very subjective question.

The Desert Fox - Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel. Someone who, during a war, earns the respect of their enemies is a great leader. He was also the type of leader that put his country before it's leaders. Whether he was involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler is not known, but he did want to see Hitler removed from power.
