So, people in the middle ages used to believe that mice came from grain, and maggots came from rotted meat. Just because they didn't make the connection doesn't mean the didn't make connection...if you know what I mean ; )

What? Babies come from sex? Now you tell me. So that's where this little boy at my breast came from... I've been wondering since he mysteriously appeared the Tuesday before last. I didn't know since I was passed out at the time... Thank you so much for solving that mystery!
Actually, I don't think it should be all that surprising if some culture should not draw the correlation to sex and conception, since sex does not lead to conception in many cases, and since there is a long time between conception and pregnancy symptoms, let alone between then and birth. If you're highly religious or highly superstitious, it would make sense that the conclusion you would draw from the timing of pregnancy would lead you to an answer other than sex got you there. I would be rather interested to know what oceanic culture it is you refer to, however, to better answer you with their particular rationale.

You are correct. They were also abused and exploited by the Japanese during WWII. They had an interesting philosophy about impregnation; which was caused by certain spirits. In their initial contacts with the west, through missionaries, they maintained this view even as the westerners tried to convince them otherwise. They also had cool answers to Westerners.
Q - Why did only young women get pregnant?
A - There are only so many spirits, and lots of younger women - statistics. And some older women DO get pregnant.
They even conducted an experiment to humor the missionaries and put a young woman under armed guard in the evenings. Sure enough, even under guard she became pregnant! When the missionaries argued that the guard himself was responsible, the natives realized these people would go to any ridiculous extreme just to win an argument!
