generally speaking, yes. taken across all characteristics, the german shepherd is probably the best. temperment, low tendency to viciousness, loyalty, friendliness, protectiveness, willingness to deal with children, and ability to 'judge' people and their intentions quickly and accurately - they excel. they're totally devoted to their masters - but not like drooling sycophants such as the irish setter. and with only a little training, they are excellent protection dogs, without the streak of insanity and viciousness that certain breeds can show ("pit bulls", dobermans, etc). even those breeds though - it's far, far less the breed, and far more the owner. back in the 1970's, the doberman was the 'big bad dog', and there was lots of hysteria about how vicious they are. they're pussycats! it's idiot owners who "train" them to be vicious.
german shepherds rock. we have a three-legger cancer survivor purebred shepherd who will turn **14** in december! most don't live that long - we consider ourselves to be as lucky as lottery winners. she's the best dog on earth!

YES!!! I own one and they are the smartest dogs in the world! Make sure you treat them well and I advice you to read about them before you get one. Also I would only recommend you German Shepherd if you had a big house and a lot of space for him. Those dogs need to run! They shouldn't be locked in a small flat as as every animal they would get crazy..

It depends upon you. I was raised around german shepards. I learned how to walk (aeons ago) by hanging onto the fur of my shepard. They have been loyal, protective, intelligent and gentle. But almost any dog will respond with those qualities if they are raised that way. Your pets are what you make them. They respond to what show them.

Without a doubt. There is not another dog to compare with them in my opinion. They are protective of the family, very loving, extremely intellegent, loyal. The list goes on and on.

Great guard dogs, loveable pets, but prone to arthritis and joint problems! If not trainde properly are too big to handle. Hard work just like any dog!

Depends how its trained - some of them are vicious creatures. I personally prefer Border Collies - loyal and (if raised correctly)good with kids and cats.
