This question is closed to anyone under 40 please. Also try to keep it from being partisan. I know the left thinks they sold out and the right thinks they grew up. I am wondering on an individual basis, why did the children of the 60's who didn't trust the establishment become the establishment. From hippies to yuppies. And how did the generation of the environment and ideals become so close minded (both left and right wing)and stop caring. I would love to hear a former flower childs response of how they changed?

We thought things were better-that things were changed and on the right path. We believed things were forever changed and we quit worrying. -then we got married and had children and got busy with day-to-day life. In spite of who we were, we were also our parents' children and thought we'd be rewarded for having the right house, getting the right house, having our children in the right school or right soccer team. We got so busy we paid little attention to politics(except for voting), partly because we thought younger people would take the torch. Although there were some problems(Watergate) they seemed to get taken care of by Congress-we thught voting worked. I think it's denial for the left or right(the definitions on those were different back then too!) Republicans stood for fiscal conservatism, smaller Govt, personal & states rights I know, hard to believe). A Republican from the 60's 70's even 80's would look like a Democrat compared to Republicans today. It all changed in the '80s. Both Republicans and Democrats or Moderates have been fooled. I really didn't wake up to the reality until my son was grown and the current govt came into power. Also, how do you tell your kids you railed against authority and smoked pot?!!! So, for me, I am today more like I was many years ago but I'm not in my corporate job any longer and my son is grown. I have never seen so much anger and name-calling between the parties rather than real discussion. I'm worried that younger people don't understand that things have changed so. I do care! We've been fooled. Of course, many of us boomers are fleeing to foreign countries to retire! But we hope the "youngers" will take over.

It's called survival. If we didn't adapt, we'd be standing on the corner with a "will work for food" sign. Many of us still care and many of us are still liberal in our viewpoints and care for our fellow man and the planet we inhabit. And, a lot of us went into occupations where we can pass along that caring to others. Its sad that so many of us become conservative members of the so-called "Christian Right" which is neither Christian, nor right....don't know what happened to those people....their brain cells probably got too addled from smoking so much wacky tobaccy back in the good old days. At least many of us didn't become our parents since our parents grew up in the 1930's and were largely intolerant of anything or anyone who was different.

While we may not be out there in the trenches anymore protesting and shouting slogans, we haven't given up on the basic inherant goodness of people and the hope that they will do what is right for others as well as for themselves.

HA
My huband and I are both 41.

My parents WERE flower children... No doubt... then became upstanding folks later...

I am a bit of a flower child... dont follow the rules just because they are rules etc... kind of a blend

Our child.. however leans more towards the orig flower children
Pushes everything... seems to be born in the wrong era

Im not sure why or how it all changed... but I just th ink it gradually changed because it had to ...

A lot of it is coming back.. look at the retro movement
in clothes, music,..

It all reminds me of the 60's we are at war , people are fed up, etc...

OK so thats what I think

I haven't changed anything except my patched up bell bottoms. I think that a draft would open some minds, because until today's youth faces the specter of going to fight a illegitimate war, they will have no idea of what it's like to be anything other than a cheerleader for those they think represent them. I know that in 1970 when I turned 18 it was more about making things right than supporting someone because of their party affiliations.

The old establishment retired or died off, and the next thing we knew, we were the establishment. Being 57 yrs. young and having grown up in the 60's, my values haven't changed that much, I still believe in Peace, Love and Woodstock!!!!

They all went into denial, and are now your stubborn, strict parents, police officers, and public officials. But secretly, late at night, they gather and talk about the good old days and how high they got on pot.
