Tell your mother you want to take on more responsibities, including getting a job and making money, so that you will not have to burden her and the family financially when you go to college. Tell her you will use the money you earn to buy some of your own clothes and other things that you need, and that in turn will help your mother financially. You can get out and find a job and show your mother you are smart and responsible, just because she is a procrastinator doesn't mean you have to be.

I started working at 14. Trust me, you've got PLENTY of time to work!
Working is not the way to help further your education. You can't make enough money at the wages they pay teenagers to get ahead that way.
The best thing for you is to get excellent grades, get into internship programs, activities, and other collaborative events that will result in scholarships. Find volunteer activities that will let you shine and experience growth of your social and professional skills.
Be glad that your mom is taking the responsibility to support you. I'm proud of you for wanting to further yourself, but do it in a nice way and be nice to your mom.
Good luck!
EDIT: I didn't let my daughter work when she was 16. She wanted to go to med school, and she joined a club called 'Medical Explorers' instead of getting a job which helped her achieve her goal. Today she is an Ivy League graduate and in med school in New York. Working is not always the answer.

You are 16 years old, you need to start taking responsibility for yourself. Get a job, who cares what your mother says. Seriously, she shouldn't be yelling at you for getting a job. She should be yelling at you because your out running the streets or doing drugs. Get a job and save your money. College isn't cheap. Trust me, I'm in college and I'm scraping pennies. Your a smart girl...get a job! If she has a problem with it, too damn bad. You go girl!

It might help to have her talk to your school counselor ...I hope she sees that this could be a good thing for you and it also helps to learn how to use your money responsibly..
